Strategic Brainstorming: How to Brainstorm and Think Through Your New Business

- -

When I was first launching weheartbranding.com, and had no idea how to take my ideas from plan to profit, I was committed to having regular brainstorming sessions with one of my small business besties, Jessica Hackett. I was searching for a way to grow my business and to earn a full time salary with part time hours. Jessica was transitioning from social media marketing to content strategy, and deciding whether to launch her own business. We would brainstorm once every other week and run ideas by one another for hours at a time.

Our brainstorming sessions were helpful and exciting. After each call, I felt amped. Full of ideas, ready to take on the world. Problem was, I had no idea what to do with that energy. I didn’t know how to brainstorm in a strategic way that lead to real action and a profitable business model.

While it was great to brainstorm together and bounce ideas off of my friend, we were both in the early stages of our business. Neither of us could effectively guide the other to the next step. I needed to brainstorm above my business. I needed to talk with an entrepreneur who knew what she was doing.

I never really found that person, but so wish I had. If I had someone to brainstorm with, a successful entrepreneur whose brain I could pick, I know I would have found success must faster.

Here’s the thing: sharing your ideas with your besties while you’re in brainstorming mode is awesome. It builds confidence and helps you work out the early issues. But at some point girl, you have to step it up. You have to reach out to the women who inspire you, and maybe even scare you a little.

Why? It’s pretty simple. The badass business babes you admire have already walked the path you want to walk. They’ve suffered the same pitfalls and overcome the obstacles that are currently holding you back. They know exactly what it takes to get to where you want to be.

If you’re already working your network, you’ve taken the first step. The next step is to brainstorm above you.

When you have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with a small business owner who walks the walk, you gain a roadmap to achieving your goals. Pick her brain and discover:

What business decisions will serve you and which will distract you.

Not every idea is a home run. When you talk to someone with experience, she can tell you which ideas are gold and which ones need work. That kind of clarity can mean thousands of dollars and hours saved.

Who to connect with to get your business noticed, and how to meet them.

Networking is hard and scary! Especially when you’re starting out. Your small business bestie can help you find the events and communities that will help you grow. A great start is Facebook group. Make sure to join ours for amazing community and entrepreneurs in all stages of business!

When to launch your next product or idea, and how to plan for success (not stress!!)

That huge, impossible thing you’ve been dreaming of doing? You can talk to someone who has done it. She can tell you how she did it, and how she’d do it again now. You don’t have to tackle this alone.

Where to find your ideal audience online, and how to make content they love.

There are ten thousand ways to market yourself on the internet. Discover what serves you and your audience, instead of wasting time and energy throwing spaghetti at the digital wall.

Why to narrow in on your zone of genius and find a team to help with the rest.

As your business grows, your role needs to change. An experienced entrepreneur can help you discover which parts of your business need your skillset, and which areas can be outsourced for best results. Trust me- you can’t do it all, and you shouldn’t have to.

How to get from where you are now to where you’ve always wanted to be.

When you brainstorm above your business, you talk to someone with direct experience in what you want to do. Your small business bestie can guide you towards success, provide you with concrete next steps and answer all the questions that come up along the way.
